Steam Holiday Sale

Christmas is upon us, and as is customary, Steam is celebrating with another Holiday sale!

Along with the usual, absurd savings that come with these sales, Steam has put up a massive incentive to spend your money in their store.

Every day, there will be a set of 6 games on sale, each will have a specific achievement in them that will reward you with either a gift, containing a full game or a store coupon, or a lump of coal.

Ordinarily, a lump of coal is a bad bad gift, but in this case there is a twist. Every lump of coal in you Steam Inventory as of January 2nd, gives you a single entry into the “Epic Holiday Giveaway”

What, may you ask, makes this giveaway so epic? The grand prize to this particular giveaway, is Games. ALL the games. The grand prize, for one single steam user is EVERY SINGLE game available in the winner’s region on steam, for free.

First prize, coming just behind the grand prize, is the top 10 items in the wishlists of 50 Steam users.
Second Prize, the top 5 wishlist items of 100 winners and,
Third Prize is a Valve Complete Pack, for 1,000 winners.

As is becoming customary, you’re required to have at least 10 items in your wishlist to enter the draw. So update your wishlists, break out the piggy banks, get yourself some achievements and saddle up!

Valve have released beta footage of the new Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

Will CS:GO beckon a new era in FPS gaming, or will it just be more of the same?

THAT’S ALL FOLKS!The beta period for EA’s Battlefield 3 is officially over!

My first impressions of BF3 beta, weren’t super positive, but I was almost too excited to care at the time. It started with a whopping 3.9GB download (over 3 times larger than the console equivalent.) and then moved on to hassles with graphics card drivers, browser plug-ins and the new Battlelog system. Once all of the set up fiddly bits were sorted, and once I had struggled my way through Battlelog, I was able to finally get into the game.
I spent about 11 to 12 hours on the beta, and got to about level 24. First thoughts of the actual game play in the beta were positive, with a lot of fun with the combat, and the new feel. The graphics were simply stunning, I was almost struggling to believe my eyes. The map was interesting, but very linear and wrought with forced choke points. After a while, the map available began to grow stale, as it always does in a beta. I found the levelling system seemed to be a little fast, considering the time I had hoped to spend in the game. There were a few bugs, but nothing that was completely game-breaking.
For the most part, I was sick of the demo by the 7th or 8th day, but was quite sure the game full release would be good fun.
Then came Friday night, when EA/DICE announced that another map called Caspian Border would be available for open play as a 64 player conquest map. Those who played BF2 in the past would know 64player Conquest is the home of a large portion of the greatest battlefield moments. The map is ENORMOUS, and absolutely GORGEOUS. The larger scale of Caspian, and the extra amount of trees and foliage really proved to show off the game’s stunning graphics.
Within a single round, which is significantly longer than a Rush round, I was completely in love. I had suggested to Jake that it would be a great marketing move to open up this map just before the end of beta to get everybody totally hooked for the release, and I was totally spot on. This map brings back all of the things that made Battlefield truly different and special.
In conclusion, after a decent play of the BF3 beta, I am 100% excited for the full release. I had lost a little steam in the middle, but the Conquest map sealed the deal for me. The game had some pretty minor flaws, and some bugs to fix, but all in all, it was a bunch of fun, and ran impressively smoothly. My biggest concerns are that levelling may be a little too short, but only time will tell, and that the kinks in Battlelog won’t be sorted.
This one definitely has my vote, I’ll definitely be grabbing it on or shortly after release.

Peace out.

LOVE THE GAME!

(if you cannot download the episode please let us know on twitter @playerhatenews)

Here they are, folks! These are 4 screen shots taken in-game of the Battlefield 3 beta.

The quality of the screens is somewhat diminished, as they always are, but are still gorgeous. The game has upheld it’s graphical expectations perfectly, it is simply stunning.

I’ll try to get more of the other stages of the map in upcoming plays, but to experience it properly, I strongly recommend picking up the beta when it goes public on the 29th!

Peace out.

Battlefield 3 Open Beta begins September 29

DICE and EA have just announced that their upcoming shooter Battlefield 3 will have a multiplayer beta open for everyone to download and play starting Sept. 29 (that’s next Thursday).

The beta will be available on PC, PS3 and Xbox360, so everyone can take the game for a spin before its late October release (25th NA, 27th Aus/NZ and most other places)

So what platform will you be downloading it on?

//Jake

EDIT: So in my excitement I *may* have skipped over a few details, here’s the rest of what you need to know.

Those that pre-order the game through EA’s Origin store will receive early access to the beta, starting 2 days earlier on Sept. 27.

Also, for those on PS3 and 360 that bought the Medal of Honor Tier 1 edition last year, they will also get the extra 2 day access.

The beta will run until October 10th, so a solid 2 weeks of Battlefieldy goodness!

Oh, Dead Island for PC! How cruel a mistress you are! You’re blurry, and bloomy. You’re always-on-chat and uncustomizable settings make me hate you… but you’re a good game! You’re a lot of fun when played multiplayer. If only I could tweak a few things… and now I can! The guys, or guy.. or girl, over at theplaywrite.com has compiled an almost all encompassing application that runs parallel to Dead Island which allows you to tweak the field of view, fix the sensitivity of the mouse, reduce or remove bloom and blurry motion, and even change the skybox to a cloudy and more gloomy setting. This community application is a must have for those of you with any desire to change the game settings to suit you. Best of all the mods over at the steampowered.com forums have confirmed that this applying this will not put you at risk of a VAC ban! Score one for the modding community. Steam Daily Deal: DARKSIDERS 75% off!!

Your eyes do not deceive you guys, this little gem from relatively new developer Vigil Games is currently on sale for just $5.00USD. That’s an incredible price for this game, so if you don’t already own it, now is a perfect time to pick it up.

But act fast, cause as I’m typing this the sale only has 13 hours, 1 minute to go!

Here it is folks! The first official Xbox 360 Battlefield 3 gameplay trailer, and the extended “Operation Guillotine” singleplayer mission trailer!

I wasn’t at first that excited for the single player aspect of this game. Battlefield has always been, first and foremost, a multiplayer experience for me. This game’s single player however seems to be greatly improved from Bad Company 1 and 2, and hopefully, with a decent story line, DICE might pull off that second aspect to the game quite nicely.

Love the trailer, really looking forward to seeing more of the singleplayer as well now.

Peace out.
